Optimizing the EHR Experience
Epic is a privately held health IT vendor focused on developing industry-leading software systems that help orchestrate and improve care. Our integrated applications are built with the patient at the heart to share a single codebase and user interface. This native integration and consistent look and feel across our software suite helps optimize the EHR experience for end users across the continuum.
Epic’s software is designed based on user-centric principles to deliver intuitive workflows that promote efficiency. At the core, Epic’s development strategies are focused around the clinician’s experience. The system is fundamentally designed to allow end users to effectively and efficiently deliver patient care and record key information to support their workflow needs and professional responsibilities.
Features that help optimize the EHR experience include:
- Mobile applications. Natively integrated mobile applications give clinicians access to patient information and workflows on touch-enabled devices. They can communicate securely with other members of a patient’s care team and receive push notifications for important alerts.
- Voice recognition tools. The system integrates with speech-to-text vendors to support clinicians in documenting notes, letters, and flowsheet information. The embedded “Hey Epic!” voice assistant allows clinicians to use voice commands to take actions in the system, such as quickly retrieving specific information.
- Clinical review capabilities. Epic includes review tools that are appropriate to users’ roles, allowing them to quickly review longitudinal patient information in a visually succinct way.
- Personalization options. Clinicians can update their user settings to tailor the system to their unique needs. For example, users can save their preferred orders and order sets to a personalized Preference List. The system also uses machine learning to customize the system for each clinician. For instance, the machine learning engine can provide each clinician with a list of buttons for common diagnoses they use most often.
Why We Participate in the Arch Collaborative
The Arch Collaborative findings on governance, training, and personalization help us make changes to our R&D, training, and implementation processes to drive better outcomes for organizations in the Epic community. For example, personalization training sessions are now required for all physicians prior to go-live.
