Ambulatory EMR Perception 2006

August 31, 2006

Ambulatory EMR vendors are numerous; therefore, selecting the vendor that’s right for one’s practice, size and specialty is challenging.

KLAS interviewed a random sampling of healthcare and IT professionals from both standalone and provider affiliated ambulatory environments (physician offices, clinics, etc.) regarding Ambulatory EMR systems and vendors. All but four participants were automated with a Practice Management (PM) system and none had an EMR system, which was an underlying requirement.

Participants compared the possible vendors in the market and identified key drivers in choosing a particular solution.

Key Findings

  • Sixty-nine percent (197 of 285) of respondents plan to purchase an EMR system within the next two years.
  • The overwhelming majority (90 percent), indicate that it is important to buy the product directly from the vendor, as opposed to a third-party reseller. Reasons most cited involved: better pricing, support and relationship.
  • The larger the physician’s practice the more likely they are to purchase an EMR in the next two years.
  • The number of vendors providers are considering has increased one hundred fold since 2004.
