Meaningful Use Leading to Improved Outcomes
President Obama’s February 17th, 2009, signing of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act (part of the stimulus package known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) focused healthcare executives on two nondescript words— meaningful use. In just a few short months, this otherwise unremarkable term has become a key topic of discussion for CIOs, healthcare executives, and clinicians at the largest delivery networks down to the smallest physician practices. For these providers, meaningful use of electronic medical record (EMR) technology is the key to unlocking the dollars attached to HITECH. But with the policy makers in Washington still months away from codifying a definition for meaningful use, providers are wondering what they can do now to best position themselves to adequately meet the forthcoming requirements.
