Why are Cerner, Eclipsys, Epic, and Siemens Soarian being considered as viable options for community hospitals? Why are Meditech and McKesson Paragon, the mindshare leaders for community Hospital Information System (HIS) selections, now facing heightened competition from solutions initially developed for larger hospitals, while HMS and Keane, major vendors in smaller hospitals, seem to fade from the market? By what criteria are providers evaluating vendor options, and how does HITECH impact these purchase timelines?

KLAS targeted and interviewed 64 community hospital organizations (hospitals with fewer than 200 beds) that were planning to evaluate and purchase a community HIS solution within the next few years. These interviews revealed a dynamic market landscape where provider executives are willing to consider more complex, and often more costly, IT solutions to improve patient care and exceed impending federal requirements.
