When it comes to anesthesia information management systems (AIMS), there is currently more optimism than actual adoption in the market. In 2007, 6% of surgery departments using surgery management systems reported also using an AIMS, with another 36% planning to buy one. By 2010, 26% reported having an AIMS in place. Healthcare initiatives such as meaningful use (MU) have diverted resources to focus on hospital-wide applications, such as EMRs. However, this focus on an electronic culture is pushing attention to departmental systems, including anesthesia documentation. In 2010, 63% of hospitals using only surgery systems planned on purchasing an AIMS, and several new vendors have entered the market in response to consumer demand.
