What for years was perceived by many healthcare institutions as a distant concern has finally arrived. The long-dreaded Medicare Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) program is picking up steam, bolstered by a federal mandate that all states must establish fully operational RAC programs by April 1, 2011. Originally conducted as a three-year demonstration program in just a handful of states, RAC audits have now been made permanent by the Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006. This process dictates that RAC audits now be conducted in all 50 states in an effort to identify improper Medicare payments. Any home health agency, physician office, durable medical equipment company, or other organization that bills Medicare could be a target for these audits.
