KLAS Rates 11 Emergency Department System Vendors
2008 KLAS Report Examines Emergency Department System Offerings
Press Release Summary: KLAS spoke with more than 640 hospital-based providers in order to quantify their experience regarding the use of and satisfaction with emergency department (ED) systems.
Orem, UT –(07/03/2008)-
Since May 2002, KLAS has continued to track vendor performance and trends, and monitor progress as the emergency department (ED) market has evolved. As in other healthcare IT markets, there are a variety of solutions to choose from in the emergency department. Hospitals increasingly recognize the ED as an essential area for automation. Healthcare organizations look to ED systems to help solve problems created by increased patient volumes and clinician shortages, as well as to help them comply with new regulations.
KLAS wondered what factors differentiate one EDIS from another and if it were better to choose a best-of-breed product or an enterprise vendor. These and other questions were the impetus for the 2008 study of ED systems. For the purposes of this study, KLAS interviewed more than 640 hospital-based providers in order to quantify their experience regarding the use of and satisfaction with ED systems.
Interestingly, no one vendor offering is leading the market in all areas, and while integration may be important, it is not at the expense of some other crucial things. The key is to determine what is more important to an organization. This report hopes to provide better understanding of the market to enable providers to make informed decisions.
For a vendor/product to be included for comparison in the main body of the study, certain key modules must be in place at provider sites. These modules include: patient triage and tracking, nurse documentation and charting, physician documentation and charting, clinical decision support, order entry, CPOE, results reporting, and patient discharge.
Vendors qualifying for ranking in this study were Allscripts, Cerner, Eclipsys, EmpowER, Epic, McKesson, MEDHOST, Meditech, Picis, T-Systems, and Wellsoft. Five additional products were included in the report, but did not qualify for ranking.
